In January 2022, a few months after our Perth centre opened, Nithcree Training Services began a pilot project with Perth & Kinross Council and the Scottish Government under No One Left Behind, Scotland’s employability approach.
Who it was for
The project was for people who were unemployed or on a low income and wanted a career in haulage. It came at a time when the shortage of lorry drivers was making headlines across the UK, and hauliers were crying out for new drivers.
What trainees got
Getting an HGV licence involves several stages before you even sit in a lorry, and they can put people off. The project supported trainees through every one:
- Help with the initial medical and the provisional licence application
- Online sessions for theory test tuition
- Practical HGV training in Class 2 and Class 1 vehicles
Each of those stages is explained in our step-by-step HGV licence guide.
